There’s no denying the fact that Patrick Mahomes has become a global superstar in recent years, but few could have predicted how this would manifest itself in the world of sports memorabilia collectors. 

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback must feel on cloud nine after becoming a Super Bowl champion for a third time, alongside three parallel MVP awards. However, Mahomes now finds himself in the limelight for a very different reason – the auction of his rookie card.

Mahomes’ rookie card was put up for auction by Goldin in June and has now sold for a staggering $173,000. 

So, what makes it such a desirable addition to a collector? Well, there seem to be a couple of ways to look at it. Considering the card itself, it’s worth noting that there are only ten of them in existence, which makes it a rare piece of history to own. Furthermore, the card includes a patch from one of Mahomes’ jerseys, is in excellent condition, and is signed by the quarterback. 

However, Goldin CEO Ken Goldin also noted Mahomes is “on track to pass Tom Brady's seemingly untouchable Super Bowl record and that has really impacted the interest of his cards from both new and longtime collectors”. Therefore, although the price of the card already seems impressive, it’s likely the winning bidder is thinking long-term, with it possibly being worth much more in the future if Mahomes continues to build on his already world-class legacy.
