The Las Vegas Aces find themselves on a three-game winning streak following a 71-84 victory against the Connecticut Sun away from home. However, that positive news has taken a backseat to something far more impressive.
That’s right – Aces’ forward A’ja Wilson has done what many expected her to do and has become the first player in WNBA history to record 1,000 points in a single season. Having overtaken previous record holder, Jewell Loyd, who registered 939 points in the 2023 season for the Seattle Storm, Wilson has continued to reach new heights in the sport.
Wilson’s special moment arrived with 1 minute, 57 seconds remaining, with teammates and the Michelob Ultra Arena’s crowd celebrating the record-breaking fadeaway jump shot. However, what has made this achievement possible isn’t a small moment like that, but Wilson’s incredible consistency throughout the season. In this game alone, she contributed to the team’s victory with 29 points, making 13 of her 25 attempted field goals and 3 of 5 free throws while providing 3 assists for her teammates and making a total of 9 rebounds. It’s hardly surprising she’s the odds-on favorite to win the 2024 WNBA MVP award.
The Aces’ forward was asked how she continues to perform so well on the court and noted, “I really try to pinpoint little things. I really have to credit my offseason work and my preparation. I take time to get away from basketball, to let me miss it. So then when I'm in it, I don't take it for granted. My screensaver is, 'Rest at the end, not in the middle,' and that's something I tell myself every single day. I got work to do, that that's going to be my mindset until I'm done playing; until I've squeezed everything out of this game”.
