The Philadelphia Eagles delivered a crushing blow to the Washington Commanders in a 23-55 victory that saw them win the NFC Championship. This should have been a celebration for fans to enjoy and look back on with joy for years to come – and for many, that’s exactly what it was.
However, during all the celebrations, an unfortunate event took place that claimed the life of 18-year-old Temple University student, Tyler Sabapathy. While taking part in the post-game festivities on the streets of Philadelphia, Sabapathy had climbed a light pole but then slipped and fell flat on his back. Sadly, the young fan also hit his head on the concrete sidewalk and was initially hospitalized with a brain injury. It has since been confirmed that Sabapathy passed away from his injuries two days later.
Following the devastating news, Temple President John Fry and Vice President for Student Affairs Jodi Bailey released a statement, reading, “The loss of a promising 18-year-old man like Tyler is both tragic and traumatic. There are no words that can make sense of it, and the entire Temple community mourns his passing. Our hearts go out to Tyler's family, friends, classmates and all who knew and loved him”.
School administrators went on to note, “As a member of the university's club gymnastics team, Tyler displayed exceptional self-discipline and work ethic, spending countless hours a week training and honing his craft. He was loved by his teammates, friends and coaches here in Philadelphia”.
