Saquon Barkley has officially become the highest-paid running back in NFL history after agreeing to a lucrative contract extension with the Philadelphia Eagles. The deal, worth $41.2 million over two years, includes $36 million fully guaranteed at signing, according to multiple reports. Additionally, Barkley has the potential to earn up to $15 million more through incentives and escalators.
With an annual salary exceeding $20 million, Barkley is now the first running back in league history to reach that milestone. The extension comes just one year after he initially joined the Eagles on a three-year, $37.75 million contract in free agency.
Barkley’s Historic Season Leads to Massive Payday
Barkley’s record-breaking performance played a major role in securing his historic contract. In his first season with Philadelphia, he delivered a dominant campaign, rushing for 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns in the regular season. He added another 499 rushing yards in the playoffs, bringing his total to 2,504 yards - surpassing Terrell Davis’ previous single-season record for combined rushing yards.
His standout season earned him NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors and a first-team All-Pro selection. More importantly, he helped lead the Eagles to their second Super Bowl title in franchise history.
Eagles Make Rare Move to Lock in Their Star
Extending Barkley’s contract just one year into his original deal is an unusual move, highlighting his immense value to the franchise. With Barkley locked in for the next two seasons, the Eagles have ensured that their offense remains powered by one of the most dominant running backs in the game.
