The MLB has decided to hand out three suspensions to those involved in the incident that marred the series finale between the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers, with the latter winning 6-5 on Thursday night.
Robert Suarez was handed a three-game suspension and fined an undisclosed amount on Friday after he was found guilty of intentionally hitting Shohei Ohtani with a pitch. The Padres’ closer will appeal the decision, which kept him eligible to play against the Kansas City Royals. However, he did not play in their 6-5 defeat on Friday.
Both managers of the teams, Mike Shildt (Padres) and Dave Roberts (Dodgers), were also ejected in the top of the ninth inning after they both ran onto the field and bumped into each other during a heated argument that almost became physical. If it were not for the rest of the players and coaching staff, it may have turned nasty.
Both had served their suspensions on Friday night.
Tensions Boiled After Earlier Incident
Shildt had believed that Dodgers reliever Jack Little had intentionally hit Fernando Tatis Jr. in the right hand with a pitch, which had led to the bench-clearing of both sides that have had a heated rivalry for several years.
In the bottom of the ninth, Suarez’s pitch hit Ohtani on the back of his right shoulder. The Japanese superstar managed to stop his teammates from entering the field for the second time when he waved them back.
Suarez denied that his pitch wasn’t retaliation for what had happened to Tatis earlier in the ball game.
