The NBA has responded to the recent allegations made against Kawhi Leonard and the LA Clippers by launching a formal investigation. While these types of processes tend to be focused more on establishing the facts and verifying the claims than on briefing the media, there is sure to be more to this story in the coming days.
Why Are The NBA Investigating?
A now-defunct tree brokerage company published a list of creditors that was then taken up by an investigative journalist and podcaster. After looking through the list in detail, he found evidence of payments from the brokerage to Leonard, and no sign of Leonard ever having done any work to promote the company. He also found that the brokerage had been supported by a $50-million transfer from Steve Balmer, the owner of the Clippers.
Why Was This Done?
While the allegations and legal and financial details presented have to stand up to scrutiny, this type of approach would typically be taken to try and circumvent the league’s salary cap. Any attempt to break such a rule could bring with it a sizable penalty (up to $7.5 million), the voiding of contracts, and even having to give up future draft picks.
When media outlets contacted Leonard and Balmer for comment, the Clippers replied with statements to the effect that neither has any knowledge of impropriety. The investigation will look to shine a light on what has been going on and whether the claims made in recent days can be substantiated.
