Choosing a sports career can be a wonderful decision – especially if you’re as talented as the likes of former NBA superstar Blake Griffin. The former power forward enjoyed an incredible career with the Los Angeles Clippers, Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, and Boston Celtics, and was selected for 6 All-Star games as a result.
However, what a lot of people don’t think about is how short this type of career is. At just 35, Griffin has already retired from basketball, and it’s safe to say that this can leave a huge void in the lives of many players.
From Dunking to Punchlines
Of course, there are plenty of career opportunities for former basketball players, including the likes of coaching and commentating. However, Griffin has taken a path that few in the game are likely to follow by becoming a standup comedian.
With $250 million in NBA earnings burning a hole in his back pocket, it feels like an unnecessarily risky leap for Griffin to put himself in the firing line like this. However, comedian Brad Williams believes he’s got what it takes to succeed in the business, joking that, “He’s good. And, I hate that. ‘Cause you can’t be good at everything”.
Perhaps the biggest challenge for a new comedian is finding enough material to work with. However, Williams also thinks Griffin has a head start here, thanks to his career in the NBA and former relationship with Kendall Jenner, but whether he’s willing to go down that rabbit hole remains to be seen.
