Oklahoma State Football coach Mike Grundy has found himself coming under fire from those who oppose some comments he recently made about Ollie Gordon’s DUI arrest.
Speaking at a Big 12 Media Day, Grundy was asked why he hadn’t suspended Gordon – one of his most talented players – following the incident. He then explained how he’d subsequently done some research into how many drinks would put someone over the limit and claimed he’d likely driven in that state himself over the years.
Notably, Grundy told listeners that he wasn’t “justifying what Ollie did” but that “I’m telling you what decision I made. Well, I thought I’d probably done that a thousand times in my life”. Interestingly, Grundy later made a social media post to explain that he wasn’t talking about drunk driving but that he was also “guilty of making bad decisions”.
MADD’s Statement
Since Grundy made the above comments, the non-profit organization Mothers Against Drunk Driver (MADD) has released a statement suggesting “Such statements are not only irresponsible but also dangerous, as they undermine the serious risks associated with drunk driving”.
Gordon has now been charged with two misdemeanour counts of DUI under 21 years of age and transportation of an open container. However, MADD believes that Gundy’s remarks minimize the severity of the situation, referencing the recent car crash deaths of three former college football players, including Khyree Jackson, Isaiah Hazel, and Anthony Lytton Jr. However, it’s important to note that alcohol is only suspected to have been a contributing factor at this stage.
