Bojan Bogdanovic and Nikola Jokic became Serbian heroes in the final game of the 2024 Paris Olympics Group C men’s basketball game. Their contributions helped Serbia secure a 96-85 victory over South Sudan, which means they’ll now move on to the quarterfinals where they’ll face Australia on Tuesday.
Bogdanovic put on an incredible display for Serbia and managed to score 30 points, making 10 of his 14 attempted field goals, 6 of 9 three-pointers, and 4 of 5 free throws. He also provided 8 assists to his teammates and made a total of 4 rebounds throughout the game.
Jokic was his usual impressive self and contributed to Serbia’s victory with 22 points. He made 7 of his 9 attempted field goals, 1 three-pointer, and 7 of 12 free throws. He also provided 4 assists and made a total of 13 rebounds.
However, there was a bitter undertone to the result of the game, with South Sudan’s coach Royal Ivey accusing the referee of bias. Speaking after the game, he noted, “They shot 31 free throws; we shot six free throws? Let's tell the story. Let's tell the real story because that's a travesty. How do they shoot 31 free throws and we shoot six free throws? How?”
Despite Ivey’s complaints, this loss means South Sudan’s tournament has come to an end. Greece will now occupy the final wild card for the knockout stages and will take on Germany on Tuesday. The other two quarterfinals include a game between France and Canada, as well as one between Brazil and the United States.
