Despite playing for seven MLB franchises throughout his career, outfielder and designated hitter Jose Canseco’s name is synonymous with the Oakland Athletics. The 60-year-old six-time All-Star became one of the best power hitters of all time during his time with the A’s and helped the team to win a World Series in 1989, before going on to win another with the New York Yankees in 2000.
Considering the above, it’s no wonder the A’s were keen to honor Canseco’s contribution to the franchise, and the chance presented itself before a game against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.
With onlooking adoring fans, Canseco was inducted into the A’s Hall of Fame, and there’s no denying he was moved by the occasion. Speaking after the event, Canseco noted, “I'd like to thank the fans. I'm an emotional wreck right now. I can't believe I've been given this chance, the opportunity to be honored. I wish I could give the fans right now a forearm bash to everybody. Incredible memories here with the Oakland A's”.
However, Canseco wasn’t the only person honored at the event. Notably, Miguel Tejada, Terry Steinback, Bill King, Dick Williams, and Eddie Joost were also inducted into the A’s Hall of Fame and completed the sixth class. This is a particularly emotional moment for those associated with the franchise because it is currently preparing to leave the Oakland Coliseum and will eventually relocate to Las Vegas. The A’s will play at Sutter Heath Park in West Sacramento, California for the 2025 season.
