In a tragic set of circumstances, Columbus Blue Jackets winger Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew have been killed by a suspected drunk driver in Salem County, New Jersey. In what has quickly become a nightmare for the Gaudreau family, the brothers were reportedly riding bicycles together on the eve of their sister’s wedding when the incident occurred.
Reports suggest the accident occurred at approximately 8:30 pm on Thursday when a driver identified as Sean Higgins is suspected of trying to overtake another vehicle before striking the brothers on County Route 551. New Jersey State Police later informed news outlets that Higgins has subsequently been charged with two counts of death by auto and is currently being held at the Salem County Correctional Facility.
Since the accident, there has been an outpouring of grief online, with the Blue Jackets releasing a statement that reads, “The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy. Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but more significantly a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend”.
Gaudreau previously represented the Calgary Flames for nine seasons, and the franchise also took the time to release a statement, noting, “It’s with great sadness, we mourn the tragic deaths of our friend Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau. Our hearts are broken by this devastating loss. Johnny was and always will be a member of the Flames family and loved by all of Calgary”.
