Terrible news has emerged from San Francisco this weekend, with 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall shot during an attempted robbery. As things stand, he is currently in a serious but stable condition.
San Francisco Police Department Chief William Scott informed a news conference that Pearsall was walking alone through the Union Square area on Saturday evening when he was approached by someone who attempted to rob him. A physical altercation is reported to have taken place with both Pearsall and the suspect receiving gunshot wounds in the chaos.
Scott went on to confirm that both Pearsall and the suspect were then taken to a local hospital and were reported as being in stable condition. The suspect has since been identified as a 17-year-old from Tracy, California and is now in custody.
It seems Pearsall may have simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time, with no suggestions that he was targeted due to being an NFL player. Although police believe the suspect was acting alone, lines of enquiries are taking place to get to the bottom of the incident.
When asked about Pearsall’s current condition, Scott noted, “I can say this: He was talking and that’s a good thing. Again, he’s stable. So, we still need to go back and confirm some things. So, there’s more to do on that”. Notably, it has also been confirmed that police are providing security at the hospital while Pearsall is being treated, with manager John Lynch and other 49ers staff visiting their rookie wide receiver.
