With consecutive Super Bowl wins in the bag, the Kansas City Chiefs were hoping to start the new season well as they pursue glory for the third year in a row. However, things weren’t going to be easy for the team, with their game of the regular-season opener set to be a repeat of the AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens. Last season, the Chiefs got the better of the action, progressing to the Super Bowl with a 17-10 victory at the M&T Bank Stadium.
This time, the Ravens were hopeful of avenging that loss, with NFL Most Valuable Player Lamar Jackson hoping to get one over on Chiefs’ superstar Patrick Mahomes. Despite this, the Chiefs again walked away with a 20-27 victory to kickstart their regular season in style, but it’s fair to say the Ravens weren’t happy with what went down.
With tight end Isaiah Likely seemingly securing a last-second touchdown to give the Ravens a chance to win the game with a two-point conversion, things quickly turned sour. Having initially been ruled a successful touchdown, a replay led to disappointment as it confirmed the front of Likely’s foot had touched the out-of-bounds line.
Of course, despite the Ravens protesting the decision, the touchdown was then overturned, confirming a Chiefs victory. Nevertheless, Jackson wasn’t convinced, noting after the game, “I thought it was a touchdown. I still think it's a touchdown”. However, the replay was looked at and referee Shawn Hochuli confirmed “The runner’s toe hit out of bounds. It’s an incomplete pass. The game is over”.
