Diontae Johnson’s name has never been far from the headlines in recent weeks, which isn’t always a good thing. Mainly, he found himself in the spotlight in December 2024 after he refused to enter a game for the Baltimore Ravens. This drama subsequently saw the wide receiver receive a one-game suspension before being excused from a practice session and eventually waived.
Johnson was then picked up by the Houston Texans, which may have felt like a chance for a fresh start for the wide receiver. However, things simply didn’t go to plan for him again. Ultimately, he played just two games for the team and had very limited game time. Following the team’s wild-card playoff win over the Chargers, Johnson was visibly upset in the locker room and reportedly asked to be released.
It has since been confirmed that the Texans waived Johnson, with coach DeMeco Ryans noting, “Unfortunately, with Diontae, it didn't work out. We’re on to the Chiefs”. However, what makes this story more interesting is that the Ravens have now stepped in and claimed Johnson off waivers again.
Some fans might be wondering why the Ravens would make such a move after releasing Johnson a few weeks ago, but it seems like a smart play. Johnson is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, which means he could be offloaded for a potential compensatory pick for the Ravens. Therefore, although Johnson won’t play another game for the Ravens, if he joins another team this offseason, the Ravens will directly benefit from the move.
