In what is certain to be devastating news to Gerrit Cole, the New York Yankees have announced that the right-hander will undergo Tommy John Surgery that is likely to see him miss the entirety of the 2025 season, as well as some of the 2026 season.
The issue appears to have come to the forefront during Thursday’s training game against the Minnesota Twins. Cole struggled to make an impact in the session and ended up giving up 6 runs in fewer than 3 innings. Following the game, it was confirmed that the six-time All-Star had been struggling with right elbow soreness, and this paved the way for a consultation with Dr. Neal ElAttrache – a specialist surgeon who is set to perform the upcoming surgery.
Unfortunately, Cole also underwent surgery in the previous offseason for issues with his elbow, so this is almost certainly a frustrating time for him. Following the announcement, Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted, “Unfortunately, sometimes, it’s part of the game. We missed him for the first couple of months last year this time of year. It created opportunities that guys stepped up in. Whatever happens, whatever it is, we’re going to support our guy and try to get him right and be there for him”.
Cole has since spoken on social media about his current situation, noting, “From the time I first dreamed of wearing the Yankees uniform, my goal has always been to help bring a World Series championship to New York. That dream hasn’t changed. I still believe in it, and I’m more determined than ever to achieve it”.
