With the Los Angeles Lakers currently searching for a new head coach following Darvin Ham’s exit after two seasons, speculation has already started surrounding who could take the job.
In a recent discussion with Magic Johnson, the five-time NBA champion and Lakers legend was asked for his thoughts on the matter. Unfortunately, if Johnson does have any insight into the behind-the-scenes head coach hunt, he wasn’t giving much away, claiming “I couldn’t tell you. It’s up to the Lakers and Jeanie and Rob. I hope they get a good one, though”.
Could Magic Johnson Return to the Lakers?
Of course, lots of people want to know whether Johnson would be interested in the role of Lakers head coach if it was offered to him. Ultimately, it seems the last thing on his mind right now, with his response to the question being a resounding “No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Thank you, though”.
It might be disappointing to some people, but Johnson’s response makes a lot of sense. He’s almost 65 years old at this point and hasn’t held a coaching role since his last stint with the Lakers in 1994. Furthermore, he’s gone on to become a billionaire through his business ventures, so probably doesn’t have the time or energy for such a role anymore.
The current two names being mentioned regularly for the role include former Hornets head coach James Borrego and Celtics assists coach Sam Cassel. For now, we’ll just need to wait and see.
